To believe, or not to believe

"Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings -- that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide." -the Buddha

Consider this scenario: I often found so many people believing in a novel and bizarre stuff in emails and smses forwarded by family, friends and colleagues which at the end tell you to pass on to everyone you know and with a sense of urgency--you know those chain letters? The last thing of this kind I received was through an sms from a dear friend of mine. It was telling me: "CNN reported 3 days ago that the earth's plate at the Australian region is moving north towards Asia and feared to collide with the one at south of Java and they feared there's going to be a tidal wave. Please forward to your friends and don't let it stop in your hands!"

We sometimes tend to take for granted this kind of information and believe it right away without verifying its credibility. So we go on forwarding it to our friends. In this case my friend wasted her few dollars to sms a whole bunch of friends a hoax. Well one might say it's not harmful. Maybe not, but one thing for sure--it's annoying.

Generally, any info contained in chain letters which tell you to "forward everyone you know" would turn out to be a hoax. If something is so big, shouldn't it be coming from a credible sources like TV news instead of circulating around on the Net from unknown, dodgy sources?

It can be taken to other contexts than just chain letters of course. Sometimes we take for granted teachings or hearsays that we see have been around for so long and we accept them as facts. Old wives tales would be another good example--most of them turn out to be not necessarily so true.

So, it is always good to question everything that we hear or learn. False information is not only annoying but can put us at a disadvantage or even harmful for our growth and development.

With this idea or philosophy however, it doesn't mean that we should close our minds and not accepting anything to believe. In fact it's very important to keep our minds open for anything, and be open to any possibilities, for I believe we grow best by doing this. It is however very important that we do not accept anything that we hear or read blindly. Adopt anything that we find useful and discard what we don't.
