The Pendulum of Happiness

The horizontal line below the pendulum represents a spectrum. The '-1' end represents the deepest sorrow. The '+1' end represents the highest level of joy. The '0' point represents neutrality - neither happy or sad.

Now consider the pendulum. Drag that pendulum to the right and release it so that it swings to the left. Here, the further we pull the pendulum, the further it swings to the opposite direction.

When we depend our happiness on something, it's like we're pulling that pendulum to the right. When that thing changes or gone, we are releasing the pendulum. The further we pull it to the right, the further it will swing to the left - the stronger we depend our happiness on that thing, the stronger we will experience sorrow when it changes or gone.
